Saint Angela Merici (1474 - 1540) was the foundress of the Ursulines. As a young woman she became a member of the Third Order of St. Francis (now known as the Secular Franciscan Order), and lived a life of great austerity, wishing, like St. Francis, to own nothing, not even a bed.

St. Angela Merici was orphaned along with her sister at the tender age of ten. She lived in a time of war, strife and violence as a young girl with no parents to guide or console her. When she lost her sister to an untimely death, she felt a terrible anguish, and prayed earnestly for her sister's soul. She received one of her first visions.

In 1962 St. Angela Merici was proclaimed the principal patron of Desenzano by a decree of the Sacred Congregation of Rites. In 1861, Pius IX extended her veneration to the universal Church. Saint Angela's body is incorrupt. After Angela's death the Company of Saint Ursula spread rapidly. Ursuline communities were established quickly in France.

Finally, on the 25th of November, 1535, Angela chose twelve virgins and laid the foundation of the order of the Ursulines in a small house near the Church of St. Afra in Brescia. Having been five years superior of the newly-founded order, she died. Her body lies buried in the Church of St. Afra at Brescia. She was beatified in 1768, by Clement.
